Petworth is a beautiful, quaint market town set in the heart of the South Downs National Park and is rich with a history that goes back for centuries. Just an hour’s drive from London and half an hour to the South coast Petworth is very accessible and yet you will feel like you have stepped back in time when you soak up the atmosphere and elegance of the town.

Best local event:  The Petworth Summer Festival spans two weeks every July and the town comes alive with classical concerts and recitals, chamber music, jazz, cabaret, theatre and comedy.  Don’t miss it if you are a lover of the Arts.

Best place to grab a drink or a bite to eat:  Petworth is definitely a foodie’s heaven!  There are a wide variety of eating places including some very smart tea rooms and cafes as well as gastro pubs galore.  We rather like The Hungry Guest Cafe where you will find it hard to resist their amazing sour dough pizzas and tempting range of home- made cakes (Mary Berry would definitely approve!)

Best place to shop:  Petworth is a retail haven away from the bustle of the traditional High Street. You will be spoilt for choice with independent shops galore where you can treat yourself to some fine foods, fresh flowers, books and individual designer fashions for both ladies and gentleman as well as some fine antiques.

Top tip when visiting the area:  Do give yourself time to visit Petworth House and park now owned by the National Trust.  A palatial 17th century mansion on the edge of the town with its high walls surrounding the house and gardens designed by Capability Brown seemingly enclose Petworth in a bygone age which gives the town a magical fairy-tale feel.

Getting back to London or further afield (for work or pleasure):  Petworth is far from being a commuter town but that is part of its unique charm.  If you need access back to the Big Smoke then Pulborough is just over 4 miles away and trains run to London Bridge and London Victoria in just under 90 minutes.

Educational facilities: Dorset House at Pulborough is a highly regarded preparatory school for boys and girls.  Seaford College at East Lavington, just south of Petworth, is an independent co-educational school for children ages 10-18.

Sports Facilities:   Petworth has its own golf course for all abilities and further facilities can be found at the West Sussex Golf Club in Pulborough and the prestigious Cowdray Park golf course in Midhurst.  The Cowdray Park Estate, famed for its polo matches, has just launched the Polo Club Academy where adults and children can learn the techniques of this sport either as part of a group or on an individual basis.

Worst fact about the area:  Petworth is a major tourist attraction and inevitably becomes a “honey-pot” during the holiday season – arrive early to ensure you beat the crowds and find a parking spot!

The celebrity you would most likely find in the area:  Several well-known celebrities live in the area so you may bump into Chris Evans, Holly Willoughby or even Sean Lock when visiting the town.

What is the typical property like?:  Elegant Georgian architecture is very much in evidence in the area as well as timber framed tudor houses and more modern 21st century designs.
